This section needs additional citations for verification. In practice these are used very rarely, as they are not held in common between agencies. NATO uses the regular English numeric words (zero, one, two &c., though with some differences in pronunciation), whereas the ITU (beginning on 1 April 1969) and the IMO define compound numeric words (nadazero, unaone, bissotwo &c.). The same alphabetic code words are used by all agencies, but each agency chooses one of two different sets of numeric code words. Soon after the code words were developed by ICAO (see history below), they were adopted by other national and international organizations, including the ITU, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United States Federal Government as Federal Standard 1037C: Glossary of Telecommunications Terms and its successors ANSI T1.523-2001 and ATIS Telecom Glossary (ATIS-0100523.2019) (all three using the spellings "Alpha" and "Juliet"), the United States Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) (using the spelling "Xray"), the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International (APCO), and by many military organizations such as NATO (using the spelling "Xray") and the now-defunct Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). To change one word involves reconsideration of the whole alphabet to ensure that the change proposed to clear one confusion does not itself introduce others. One of the firmest conclusions reached was that it was not practical to make an isolated change to clear confusion between one pair of letters. It is known that has been prepared only after the most exhaustive tests on a scientific basis by several nations. The code words have been stable since 1956. Numbers are spoken as English digits, but with the pronunciations of three, four, five, nine, and thousand modified. ![]() "Alfa" and "Juliett" are intentionally spelled as such to avoid mispronunciation NATO would do the same with "Xray". The 26 code words are as follows (ICAO spellings): Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. ![]() The words were chosen to be accessible to speakers of English, French and Spanish.Īlthough spelling alphabets are commonly called "phonetic alphabets", they should not be confused with phonetic transcription systems such as the International Phonetic Alphabet. In 1956, NATO modified the then-current set of code words used by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) this modification then became the international standard when it was accepted by ICAO that year and by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) a few years later. The specific code words varied, as some seemingly distinct words were found to be ineffective in real-life conditions. To create the code, a series of international agencies assigned 26 code words acrophonically to the letters of the Roman alphabet, with the intention of the letters and numbers being easily distinguishable from one another over radio and telephone, regardless of language barriers and connection quality. The ITU phonetic alphabet and figure code is a rarely used variant that differs in the code words for digits. Technically a radiotelephonic spelling alphabet, it goes by various names, including NATO spelling alphabet, ICAO phonetic alphabet and ICAO spelling alphabet. The (International) Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, commonly known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, is the most widely used set of clear code words for communicating the letters of the Roman alphabet. We found that wide blade guards with large vents do a better job circulating the food for better and faster blending. ✔️ Blade guard vents: The blade guard is the dome-shaped part of the blender arm that covers the blades. Cordless models are portable and convenient, but they need to be charged between uses or you risk losing power before you can finish the job. ![]() cordless: A cord offers constant power, but it can get tangled or burned or could knock things over on a busy kitchen counter and stovetop. This is helpful when trying to maneuver around a busy countertop - though if you'd prefer no cord at all, we were also impressed with KitchenAid's cordless model. One of our favorite features is the thick power cord that doesn’t bunch up or get tangled. It doesn’t come with a lot of accessories, but it does come with a lidded 3-cup mixing jar that makes it easy to store leftover smoothies or dressing in the fridge, though we wish the jar was lipped for easy pouring. The handle is rubberized for a comfortable grip and the trigger is easy to press. It also didn’t suction to the bottom of containers as much as other immersion blenders we tested, and the blender attachment is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. It was able to effortlessly blend the ice and whole strawberries in our smoothie into a creamy drinkable consistency. It quickly became our go-to for smoothies because it was fairly quiet (nice in the morning when you're still groggy), powerful and easy to use. We were impressed with the quality of this KitchenAid immersion blender - one of the more affordable ones we tested. This model also includes a food processor and whisk attachment, and all attachments are dishwasher safe. The jar's lid doubles as an anti-slip mat to place under the jar while blending. In our test, we found that the jar was too large for a small-batch mayonnaise but that the blender itself made a beautiful mayo in a smaller vessel. This pick came with the largest lidded mixing jar we tested (42 ounces), which is helpful for larger batches but does require more maneuvering for smaller servings. The blender attachment clips onto the motor with ease and feels secure. The nonstick edge on the blender arm means you can blend in your pots without fear of scratching. The rubber handle is soft, narrow and comfortable to grip, and the “on” button is easy to hold down. It requires more up-and-down motion to blend uniformly, but we still found it easy to operate. Some models create a vortex that pulls food into the blades and results in suction on the bottom of the container, but the Breville’s blade guard is uniquely shaped to reduce this, which allows you to raise the tool more easily as you blend and helps prevent splatters. If they question the 888, simply explain that it is your office phone number, which you use more frequently than your home phone. The person that dials the digits will automatically get the hint that you are not interested. It features an epic speech by the game’s developer, as well as cameos from other characters. These digits are an Easter Egg number for God of War’s finale. Giving them a fake number, you provide them with the contact information of 1-88. However, they ask for your number, and your heart begins to pound. Then, finally, you feel relieved as they stand up to depart, knowing you’ve avoided another bullet. The dialogue seems to go in one ear and out the other, from wanting to reclaim your personal space as they get closer to you to engage in small talk. If you go out one night and are approached by someone at the pub who wants your phone number, the entire experience might be aggravating. It is the most effective method of permanently avoiding them. Apart from children, you can give this number to anyone who likes to bother you. They will be duped into thinking they are speaking to a real person by dialling 1-60. You can fool the kids by telling them to call Santa directly instead of merely handing them a present. If you are a parent, this year might be a good time to try something new. Many people use their smartphones to set alarms, but if you don’t want your phone in the bedroom, an alarm clock can help you start your day off on the right foot. $33 at Amazon 5.If you’re an early riser, chances are you need an alarm clock to help rouse you out of bed in the morning. Those who are profoundly deaf may want to consider the previous two options, while those who are closer to hard of hearing could maybe make use of something like this. That said, while waking to natural light can be great for mental health, it may not be effective for everyone based on their individual hearing levels. The Sunrise Alarm Clock is also probably the most technically sophisticated option on our list, with features like a USB port for device charging and the ability to double as a bedside lamp. It’s possible to turn off those noises entirely if they don’t help you, leaving the light alone to do the job. The lights work their way up to 100% brightness around 30 minutes before the scheduled time, at which point the soothing light is accompanied by one of seven selectable sounds or the din of an FM radio. Instead, this Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock from Jall has large bulbs that become increasingly bright to wake you up from sleep via natural light. Sunrise alarm clocks have garnered more attention in the mental health community than the deaf community, but they could be an interesting alternative for those who need to wake up but don’t want bed shaking, flashing lights, or vibrations to get the job done. Use this clock if you prefer lights over sound and vibration. Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock-an innovative solution It was also removed from sale for a while, but it passed the test in personal use. If you can look past those faults, though, this may be the best loud alarm clock with vibration in its class right now. That means this otherwise $30 alarm clock could cost $60 for a truly optimal experience. With no indicator to tell you when the battery is running low, you may need to have a backup plan ready. As functional as it might be, some buyers advise attaching multiples of this alarm clock to your pillow just in case one fails. Reviews say this clock’s biggest downside is its lack of durability. While the LCD screen doesn’t feature a light of its own, there is an illumination button that allows the time to be read in the dark. Most folks in the deaf and hearing-impaired community will likely make use of the vibration alone, which users suggest is strong enough to jerk them awake. This travel-based clock has three modes for vibration, an audio alarm, and a mode that uses vibration and audio simultaneously. In fact, it improves upon it via the addition of a clip that ensures the alarm clock never falls off the bed or becomes dislodged from the pillow it’s sitting under. While the ShakeAwake is out of stock, the Sonic Alert portable version also serves as a solid substitute for that beloved product. Sonic Alert SBP100 Portable Loud Vibrating Alarm Clock-a small, portable vibrating alarm For the basic task of going to sleep and waking up, though, this is approved by deep sleepers and could prove effective for the deaf and hard of hearing.
